My Favorite "Secret" Windows 10 Feature

27th August 2015

My new favorite Windows 10 feature is “Window Dock Memory”. Ok, I don’t know if there is an official name as I have not seen this talked about before. The feature allows you to dock a window to the left or right side, resize the width of the docked window and then dock a new window to the opposite side and it will fill rest of the desktop space. In previous versions of Windows it would only take up half the dekstop then you would have to resize the window to fill the rest.

Win 10 vs Win 8

Here is how you do it:

Open an application and drag the application window to the right side of the screen. When dock assist comes on you can select another window or just hit esc to cancel.

Dock Window Right

Resize the window to the size you want.
Right Window Resize

Right Window Resized

Open another application and drag that application’s window to the left side of the screen.

Left Dock

Notice the new window now fills up the entire remaining space on the desktop.

Left Dock Fill

This feature works great for note taking, chat apps, music apps, etc. It works with keyboard shortcuts also (Windows Key & Left Arrow or Right Arrow).

I hope you enjoy this feature as much as I do!
